Tala’s heart pounded as she returned to her cot in the dormitory. Yes, she had fixed one problem, but now she had another. As a slave, she had no money of her own, let alone money to pay for a luxurious dinner. Honor demanded that she repay Jakin, even if his previous charm had been dispelled by what she knew about him now. What an irritating man, she thought. Pretending to like women just to get them to hire him. She huffed. If only she could tell him off…but even as the thought crossed her mind, she considered his willingness to help her, in the middle of the night, and for the promise of dinner.
How many men did she know like that? Truthfully, none. Most men she outright avoided, or they avoided her, knowing her status.
